HomePod suddenly started playing a radio station I was listening to on my iPhone

I'm sitting at my desk and working on my MBA while listening to a radio station on my iPhone through my AirPods and SUDDENLY my HomePod starts blaring what I was listening to. I did nothing...my iPhone rests in a little cradle, so I wasn't handling it and didn't accidentally touch a button. It just happened. The MBA is the newest (just released in March), the iPhone is the 11 Pro and the HomePod was bought at the Apple Store in November. All have the latest OS.

Thanks QuickTimeKirk. Now I understand how Handoff works (and, I just turned it off). What's scary is that my HomePod is in the living room and I'm in my home office - about 40 feet away. The iPhone was not even close to the HomePod...but somehow, the handoff happened. The good news is that I now know about Handoff (which I had no idea of before).
