can anyone advise on a simple way to sort this problem as after looking at several old posts, none made sense.
Have you run Microsoft AutoUpdate, as Word 16.25 is quite old and may not be compatible with Mojave until updated.

Start with the basics: What version of Word do you have? What version of the OS?
What happens when you try launch it? Any error messages?
The last update of Office 2019 about a week ago brought it to v16.36.
Are you running any anti-virus software or so-caled "cleaning/tune-up" apps?
No error messages when I click on the icon. Yesterday it wouldn’t open one doc.
version of OS is mohave.
and I am unsure of version of Microsoft word. Running first aid in disk utility right now so cannot check version of word.
Word is version 16.25
