My iPhone XR is unresponsive

My iPhone XR is unresponsive when I touch it. I want to try a restart (volume up, volume down, power button) but don't want to loose content (photos etc) - the apple website says this doesn't erase content, but I've seen other places say that it does. Has anyone tried this? Does it erase content?

I'm waiting for the battery to drain at the moment so it will turn off and I can try turning it on again. Has anyone tried this?

  2. Press and quickly release the volume down button.
  3. Press and hold the side button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.
