what do i do if my imac is not compatible with os catalina
can't download any current apps but won't let me update since my iMac is not compatible? is my Mac a paper wait now ?

Well you can continue using it, I am still on my 2011 until I replace it. Of course if your buy a new iMac then you will have a much faster machine if you get it with a SSD and it has a minimum of 16gB of RAM, not to mention it will run current versions of Mac OS.
