I am using Photos on my Mac and it was running a little slow so I rebuilt the library (run Photos holding Option and Command). Afterwards, thousands of photos have appeared as duplicates. The only difference I can see is that in the Info, it displays the .jpg in caps in one of the photos. Why has it done this and how do I get rid of them? I am viewing in the Photos main library, not an album.
After a repair pPhotos may have discovered last-and-found items in the library, that have not been bound to a thumbnail.
And for adjustments, that have been changed between versions, for example different RAW processing, Photos will keep the previously adjusted version as well.
Do you have any cloud services enabled for Photos? My Photo Stream for example?
I do use My Photo Stream, but not iCloud for photos. If Photos is identifying copies of pictures which have been created for adjustments, how do I get Photos to not recognize them now? That is, Photos is messing up what is displayed and making things rather confusing for no good reason. That shouldn't happen, so can it be cleaned up to go away?
The duplicates you are seeing may have been created be in My Photo Stream. In the earlier version of Catalina the Photos.app changed the filename extensions of imported files from .jpeg to .JPG. my Photo Stream may have saved the files with the wrong extensions and now they are imported as new files.
Are you seeing the duplicates side-by-side in the Imports view, or are they appearing in different Import sessions?
They only appear as doubles in the Photos library, but not in the Import library. I also notice some doubles with the extension, HEIC. Again, not in imports, but in Photos library.
