Question: Does anyone have a solution to stop a lot of Pictures in Persons to keep on loosing their names?

Pictures also keep on altering a name of persons randomly.

Will this be dealt with in an update? Please!!!

Which system version do you have installed?

There are several possible reasons for named faces losing the name:

  • When you add adjustments to a photo, Photos will scan the photo againfor faces and you may have to assign the name again.
  • When you install a software update, the face recognition algorithm may have been updated, and the detected faces may now differ slightly. Then you will have to confirm some of the faces again.
  • When you download the library again from iCloud Photos, the face names may be missing, if you are using an older version of Photos (Photos 2 or older), that does not sync the photos with iCloud. And manually added faces circles may be missing in all versions of Photos, whenyou download the photos from iCloud.
  • Sometimes the faces of people get merged because of face recognition errors or an incorrect iCloud syncing.

To save the named faces and make it easier to recover from lost or wrong people names, I always add the name of the person as a keyword as well. Then I can check with two smart albums, if face names have been lost and can quickly correct the problem, for example:

  • Album 1: Find Photos with the keyword "Peter", but no named Face "Peter"
    • File > new smart album
    • Person is not Peter
    • Keyword is Peter
  • Album 2: Find Photos with the person "Peter", but no keyword "Peter"
    • File > new smart album
    • Person is Peter
    • Keyword is not Peter

I have a MacBook Pro 2017 16GB with MacOS Catalina vers. 10.15.4.

This problem occurs randomly.

Sometimes even Persons have changed names and are dedicated to another Person in my library. I have p.t. 1216 person named and 31000++ pictures and 1395 videos in my library. The originals are stored on my Mac.

Especially since the last update also the name tagged to a person keeps on being removed so that the person in the picture has a blank box. I have tried to choose Confirm extra pictures when in Persons view when I have seen that a picture has lost its tag. Then I know that Pictures should find and suggest this picture for this person. But it returns blank.

I do get the sense of putting in the names as keywords as you say, but I think I would have to hire a person to do this with all the pictures I have 🤪 Maybe I should start doing this from now on.

Also Pictures keeps on crashing and closes. This happens several times a week if I am working with changes in my pictures/videos.

I was very happy at first going from PC to Mac but now I tend to get more and more annoyed since Pictures is not working as it should and leaves me feeling very unsure if I have the possibility I want to sort and show pictures as I want to be able to. Of course I don't know how this would work in Windows and if there is any option to name tag people in that system.

I really hope that Apple will take this problem seriously in future updates. As well as the removed option to scroll through pictures when they show as my screen saver and that used to be an option. Apple couldn't give me an answer to why this option was removed when I spoke with them.

Thanks for trying!

There is no easy fix. My library with 55000 photos and a People album with 888 persons is still a mess, even nearly half a year after the Catalina upgrade. Before the upgrade I had more than 1000 people in the people album. At least the names have been saved as keywords, so I know which persons are in a photo, but I still have to identify the individual faces. Because this has happened with every major upgrade of Photos I am now relying mainly on the keywords and descriptions "Left to right. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy...". These have been proven reliable across the system upgrades. plus a screenshot of the faces circles for the group photos.

Especially since the last update also the name tagged to a person keeps on being removed so that the person in the picture has a blank box.

I have seen this a lot as well.

So far, I only noticed it in photos with more than one person.

It may be caused by the new restriction in Photos 5, that we cannot assign the same name to more than one face in the same photo. When we have a photo of a person on front of a mirror, we can assign the name to one of the faces shown, but not to the face and its mirror image.

This helps to prevent the terrible iCloud syncing errors of names, where the names in group photos or of selfies of couples have become mixed up. In the first version of I had many photos of couples, where both people have been tagged with the same name. This caused the albums of the two people to be merged. This no longer happens. But while Photos has tentatively assigned the name of Daisy to Donald in a selfie of Donald and Daisy and is waiting for the confirmation with "Confirm additional faces", we simply cannot add Daisy's name to Daisy's face, because the name is already taken for the face of Donald (invisibly). This is why we have first to confirm all wild guesses by Photos with "Confirm additional faces) to free the blocked names.

I can see that you are just as or even more annoyed by this as I am. I sometimes wonder if anyone at Apple uses (read Tests) Photos the same way some of their users do. I will definitely consider your way of solving this, at least in the future!

Stay safe from corona!
