Is it possible to dual screen my new imac with my work Macbook pro using Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 3 cable or do i require another cable? I tried this and pressed Command-F2 and it didnt work.
Any suggestions?

Why would they want to prohibit dual screen? I assume then the TB3 to TB3 cable is only useful for data/file transfer between the two devices?
We can't answer for Apple. A TB3 cable can be used for other purposes.
Just to add, dual screens are not prohibited, you could add a monitor to either Mac. There is a device called Luna Display. How well it works I can't say. https://lunadisplay.com/
