iMac Regularly Hangs with Finder Not Responding

So I've had this iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015 - v3.2 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 - 16 GB 1867 MHz DDR3) for a while, purchased second-hand from it's first owner and for the past year I've noticed the system hangs relatively often, with Finder not responding and whenever the pointer is on the desktop, it's the spinning beachball. Sometimes I can relaunch and it will be OK for a while, but more than often it needs a hard reboot as stops responding completely and even if I can get it to Restart, it won't complete.

If I switch off when I've done what I need, it is OK for a while each time, but if left to go to sleep, when it comes back, it quickly starts playing up.

It originally had 8GB RAM, so I upgraded to 16GB to see if that would help, but it hasn't.

Is there anything I can view to understand where the issue lies? When it works, it works well and I regularly back up to TimeMachine, so if I had to replace it, I'd be able to recover everything, but obviously I'd prefer to see if it's something that can be fixed first? This also happened with Mojave and has been consistent with Catalina, so I won't be surprised to find it's hardware related?

Many thanks

Martin

Great to hear Martin, latest report looks good! :)

Might do this...

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Hi Martin,

You can save us asking dozens of questions by submitting a report...

EtreCheck is a simple little app to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report...

Or use the paperclip at the bottom of a Reply to attach the full report here. :)

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck.

There is also free Malwarebytes which may take care of it...

It’s been left on all week and not had any issues with it at all which is great!

I do have one question re: the last couple of suggestions about starting in safe mode - with the standard wireless keyboard, I’m assuming that isn’t possible? I’ll plug in a standard USB keyboard if that’s the only option.

Thanks again for your help and advice, much appreciated!

Stay safe

The finder hang has been reported to be triggered by transfer of large files and is afflicting me now after trying to combine two Photos libraries. It supposedly is a flaw in the latest 10.15 update. I tried a workaround suggested at several sites by disabling the System Integrity Protection and then changing the NVRAM setting using Terminal, but it hasn't helped. Along with this, I am unable to empty the Trash or boot into Safe Mode. This flaw also is reportedly fixed in the next update beta. Does anyone have any further information?
