Hold the option key and click the TM icon in the upper right menu bar and see if you have any other possibilities> Browse Other Backup Disk.
No entry implies corruption —
You can try running First Aid on the external drive from Disk Utility...
Repair a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support
If no success you may need to start over and erase/reformat the external disk:

The solution maybe to replace it.
