Apple Music draining battery

Hi,

I have an iPhone 8 running IOS 13.4.1 everything is up to date and was performing well until this weekend. All of a sudden my battery started draining much quicker than previously. Looking at the battery usage it seems that Apple Music is causing it. I have attached two screenshots below; one for the last 24hrs and one for the last 10 days. You can see that up until Friday there was little or no background activity however this jumps massively over the weekend. I have turned background app refresh off for all app and yet Apple Music is still draining the battery when not in use; 53% of battery use in the last 24hrs without using the app.

What has changed and what can I do about it? I even tried uninstalling Apple Music and yet it continued to drain the battery!!

On the advice of Apple Support I restored my phone using iTunes as this reinstalls a clean version of the IOS software. Apparently if you factory reset from your phone it wipes the data but doesn't reinstall the software. It worked perfectly and I haven't had any issues since.

I saw this problem as well, and despite turning Background App Refresh *OFF* for the Music app, it continues to show up as the leading contributor to the device's battery drain. I then brought up the Apple Watch app, and under the Music app, I saw that a number of Apple Music playlists were set to ON, indicating that these would automatically sync to my Apple Watch. More importantly, the status looked to be IN PROGRESS (that is, a continuously animating circular arrow), suggesting that this sync process was running continuously.

Since these playlists were unfamiliar to me, I've never seen these settings previously or set them to sync, and I have no need for music sync'd to my watch, I set all playlists to OFF. This looks to have resolved the problem, though I'll continue to monitor battery usage in the coming hours to confirm.

I've got same issue with constant CPU Usage 100%, fast Battery discharge and Device overheating on a iPhone 5s (iOS 12.4.7) since Friday, 7/3

Try the following to fix it:

Open Settings > iTunes & App Store > Music

Tap Automatic Downloads On and Off 2 times

Set Automatic Downloads OFF !!

Open Music App > Library > Album

Check each Album if any one of them have the Download spinning..

If Yes then click on each Album spinning and Stop Download!!

Now Restart your Phone and the Issue should be fixed.

Seems there is a conflict between iPhone Music Library and Apple Music Server if Automatic Downloads is On.

Hope it helps..

I did the following and no more battery drain from the Music App for the last couple hours:

-Cancelled in progress downloads in the Music app

-Turned off cellular data for Music app

-Turned off auto download for Music app

-Turned off background refresh for Music app

-Shut off phone for about 10-15 minutes and restarted

I’m not sure you have to do ALL of those steps to fix it, but that’s what I did and I don’t know which combination of steps actually fixed it. I think shutting down and rebooting is important for the changes to take effect.

What worked for me is deleting the Apple Music App, then I rebooted my iPhone. I reinstalled the Apple Music App. I then went to Settings>>Music>Mobile Data, switched it off.

I never had any spinning downloads. I took my phone of charge this morning at 8am (UK Time), at 9am I still 100% battery.

So far The Battery App is reporting 16m (Background Activity), which is substantially less than yesterday

I also had the issue and reported here last weekend (July 4th).

I did the following and it solved the issue.

1 Music App

  • Open Music App > Library > Downloaded Music (you might need to "Edit" the categories on the upper right to enable the Downloaded Music category)
  • Check if you have a "Downloading" sub-category. If so, check what is trying to download and cancel it

2 Settings

2.1 Mobile Data > Disable Music

2.2 General > Background App Refresh > Disable Music

3 Switch off/on your iPhone and you should be all set.

Note: this is a workaround as we shouldn't have to deactivate all these options. Apple still needs to fix it.

I started having the same issue a few days ago except it was on my IPad Air 2. Tablet started getting hot when I was using it and the battery would drop like a rock! I closed all apps, turned off all background app refresh, restarted, even did a hard reset but nothing helped. Music was still running in the background and I hadn’t used music in a very long time on the IPad. However, I do use music occasionally on my IPhone 11. About the time I was playing music with Pandora on my IPhone (not using the music app that comes on the phone) is when the IPad started getting hot and battery going down. Just like you, music was showing the most battery use even while I was sleeping and not using IPad. Finally today after reading all of the posts in this thread I shut down all automatic downloads for the IPad and this has fixed my issue. I had not downloaded any songs in the music app on my IPhone or with any other music app in months. Not sure what set the wheels in motion to cause this problem but stopping the automatic downloads seems to have corrected the issue.

Update: auto download has always been off, just turning off iTunes in my iCloud settings seems to have fixed the battery drain without uninstalling Music.

after going through my usage history for the past couple days, it looks like the battery drain began when I streamed music from my phone to my AppleTV. I remember picking my phone up after about 20 minutes and the battery was really warm. Could be a coincidence, but it might shed some light.

I've tried the date and time settings thing - It was already set as it should be, but what the **** - I've logged out, end step by step turned them off and on, and logged in.

Now, it's been about 36 hours since I've deleted Music App and 24 since everything seems to be ok. "Deleted apps" are gone from battery usage in 24h view and are going down id 3 days view.

Fun Fact: my battery efficiency went from 83 to... 85%.

And now best part: I've downloaded the music app, synced library and manage to download two playlists (> 1300 tracks). Battery is not getting hot, usage in 24h view went to 6 procent. Everything seems to be stable for now. I am no celebrating yet, since in last few days I had moment, when it seemed ok, but if I will still be able to download something tomorrow, than...

Anyway, if someone want's to try, my suggestion is:

  • delete the music app,
  • hard restart phone - it's important, since in my case the battery was still getting drained even after the app was deleted!
  • wait at least 24 hours,
  • try installing the Music app and see where it get's You.

Hope this solves it for some of You :)
