Facetime rings but doesn't connect?

iPad Pro on one end, iPhone 6s on the other. Both running the latest iOS (13.4). They (iPhone side) call me, it rings on my end, I "accept" the call, then I get a black screen, no audio or video comes across, then it starts with "reconnecting," then drops it. Did it haf a dozen times over 10 mins or so.

The unscientific opinion is "sh****y Internet." Pretty sure my end of pretty solid, but I AM curious what issue with an ISP can cause this? I can see breakups and stuff like that, but nothing from the git-go? The fact it "rang" on my end (in an identifiable fashion) should mean we don't have issues with SOME connection.

iPad, iOS 9

Hello again Riverside_Guy,

Assuming you mean their Wi-Fi download speed is 25 Mbps, this is technically considered "high-speed" internet. However, there are many factors to consider when it comes to internet speeds and whether they may be affecting their ability to use FaceTime. For example, their internet may slow down if they have multiple devices connected to the same network at the same time, or if they use a cable internet connection it may slow down during certain times of the day/week due to “internet peak hours” where many people are online at the same time. Also, upload speed has to be considered too since you're essentially uploading live video when you use apps like FaceTime.

In addition to you testing while you're connected to a different Wi-Fi network, you may want to have your friend test it out while connected to cellular data only. They can turn off Wi-Fi in Settings > Wi-Fi. If they get a good connection to their cellular data network, this could help narrow things down a bit more. You could also have them test on a different Wi-Fi network as well. If you've been able to use third-party video conferencing apps recently on your iPad using the same Wi-Fi network you used with FaceTime, it's likely your internet connection isn't the culprit. You’re definitely welcome to have your friend try a third-party app instead of using FaceTime, however, it's very possible you could run into similar issues if your friend's connection is what's causing the problem.

Cheers!

Hello Riverside_Guy,

I understand your aren't getting video or audio when on a FaceTime call and you're also seeing an alert telling you it's reconnecting. I'd like to help you out with this.

The issue you're describing can definitely be network related. It sounds like the connection is strong enough to put the call through but not strong enough to maintain the call or produce video. The information in If you can't make a FaceTime call on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch can be helpful, specifically this section:

"If your cellular connection or Wi-Fi network are running slow, or other users are streaming audio or video on the same Wi-Fi network, you might have these issues:

  • Connection alerts or unable to connect
  • Choppy video calls
  • Black screen
  • Dropped calls

Make sure that both you and the person that you're calling are using a fast Wi-Fi or cellular connection. If you’re using Wi-Fi, FaceTime requires a broadband connection."

As far as what ISP issue could cause problems with FaceTime, it could be related to your network being behind a firewall as described here: If you use FaceTime and iMessage behind a firewall. Have you tested FaceTime on more than one network? If so, does it occur with every network you've tested? Also, does the other person report that there is no audio or video on their end too?

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Take care.

The person I am having this issue with is on 25mb/s service. They seem to be able to do streaming, although I hear they occasionally get a mushy image (they have 4k capable streaming service). It SEEMS to me that this SHOULD be sufficient for facetime but maybe not. I also realize that I don't know if their side for sure is on WiFi for this, or it is trying the phone carrier. Do I need to tell them to switch off Data (they normally DO have it enabled) on the phone and try again, or will iOS ALWAYS send via WiFi?

I COULD try and convince them to get the Zoom app... have used it several times recently for video conferences that normally are face-to-face.

Thanks for a response!
