Question: iPad is disabled - connect to iTunes

I've got an iPad 2 that has not been used in years. My wife claims she forgot her password some time ago, tried to access the iPad multiple times, and got it locked up. Now I see the screen: iPad disabled connect to iTunes. I connect to an up-to-date iTunes on my PC and a pop up in iTunes says -"To allow access, please respond on your iPad". However, nothing is happening on the iPad. I would do a full factory restore but my wife seems to think there are un-backed up (and valuable) photos on the drive. Is there any way to access the data on the iPad? Do the Apple Store geniuses have a secret way of getting to the drive?

Answer:

Once the device shows on the screen that it is disabled, no content can be accessed. You will have to restore the device to be able to use it, and that will wipe it clean.
