Apple TV

I have subscribed to Apple TV after buying a new phone , but cannot connect it to my smart tv . My smart tv does not have the apple app and I can't download it . I can connect the phone via lightening cable to HDMI to the tv , but everything plays through the TV except the Apple TV programme even though I am logged into my user
