when I downloaded high Sierra it didn't download directly to my Applications folder as an app, it downloaded to my downloads file as InstallOS.dmg. how do I get it to download as an app
If you have downloaded InstallOS.dmg you did not download High Sierra, InstallOS.dmg is for macOS Sierra.
Do you want Sierra or High Sierra. High Sierra will download directly to your Applications folder
as Install macOS High Sierra.app, and should be about 5.23GBs.

Before upgrading make a full back up of your Mac.
Check that third party apps you use have updates available for the new OS.
Check that your printers/ scanners etc have updated drivers and software available for the new OS.
Connect your mac to your router rather than rely on WiFi.
Do not use your mac while it is downloading
and do not use any other devices that share the same internet connection.
