Understood. This is why this type of scam is scary. The scammers have purchased user names and passwords from hackers that over the years have hacked sites such as Yahoo, Hotmail, LinkedIn, etc. They are no trying to extort money from users by pretending to have more information on you by showing you a password that you had used. That is all the information they have (a user name and a password). That’s it.
As TheLittles says above, change passwords for those site(s) that may have used the password quoted by the scammers, assuming you hadn’t done that years ago when notified by Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.
