It is usually best to have one Apple ID per person and use it on all of the devices owned by that person and for all Apple services (e.g., iCloud, iTunes, App Store, iMessage, etc). There is only one password per Apple ID.

You can have more than one Apple ID. Each can be used to sign into any site that requires use of an Apple ID/password from any device you have. You don't log onto a Mac using an Apple ID/Password. You login into a Mac using the username and password you have set up for it .

You can have a login password for each Mac that is different but there is only one password for each Apple ID.

re: "I ended up using a different login on each one..." I'm not sure what you mean by that. If you mean a second different Apple ID, that is possible. If you mean a different password for the same Apple ID, where did you get the second password from -- you can't have two that are valid at the same time?
