If you have the iPhone unlocked and swipe downwards from the top of the screen, you open the Notifications page. From there, you can swipe notifications to the left to delete them, or if the are older, they will usually show an X or Clear button above a group and you can use that to delete them.

To remove them individually, swipe each one from right to left and tap Clear. To remove groups of notifications, you first unlock the phone, then drag down from the center of the top of the screen to view the notifications. You can then either remove then individually or hold your finger on the “x” until “Clear all notifications” appears and tap it.
