Thumb drive seen in Tips on iPad — where to buy?

In tip 8 of 12 under Collections on my iPad Pro shows a thumb drive inserted into the iPad. Regular drives don’t work. Where does one purchase the external drive used/pictured in the Tip?

The Apple images for older iPads with a Lightning connector show the Apple Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter - and a “generic” image of a USB “Thumb Drive”. The generic image is intended to be nothing more than an “unbranded” illustration.

The image that you have just attached to this discussion thread, showing a recent iPad Pro, is believed to be from the Sandisk range of Flash drives - that incorporate a USB-C 3.0/3.1 connector - that allows direct connection to the 2018 and 2020 iPad Pro models.

Most USB Flash drives will work with iPadOS - but they must be formatted and partitioned correctly; you will commonly format as either FAT32 or exFAT, with a single data partition. Most USB Flash drives will be suitably formatted directly from its packaging.

Do you still need help?

You can simply buy an USBC memory stick/thumb drive or a USBC to USBA dongle (which apple sells) so you can use any existing memory stick/thumb drive you have.

Apple even sells a USBC memory stick/thumb drive - https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/product/HLN92ZM/A/sandisk-64gb-ultra-dual-drive-usb-type-c?fnode=5f&fs=f%3Dflashdrive-portabledrive%26fh%3D3783%252B4623%252B45ec

Please see the (blurry) photo of how the NEW iPad Pro charges. Its port does not accommodate the 'lightning' charger cable. In Tip #8 for iPad it shows a thumb drive going directly into the 2020 iPad Pro. The charger port that enters the iPad is not the same as the 2018 iPad (I just returned). It is different. I think I found one over at Amazon. I looked at the name on the thumb drive (in Tip #8) and it says SanDisk. I found it... it think Thanks. But the techno-babble threw me big time. Think my 'name' indicates that techno-babble will fly over my head. Thanks for your prompt attention to my inquiry though.

Trouble is the Apple Store does not sell these. Everything but. HaHa

You are quite correct in that Lightning connectors cannot be connected to USB-C. The product images seen in the Tips App sometimes vary between versions of iOS/iPadOS - and online images for both Lightning (with the Adapter) and newer USB-C versions occur in many places. As your question was initially unclear as to which version you were making enquiry, I included explanation of both in my first reply.

Your photograph clearly illustrates a USB-C connector, as such, if you wish to make a direct connection without the need for any adapter, the Flash Drive that you choose will need to incorporate a USB-C connector.

Sandisk are one of the better manufacturers to offer devices with USB-C connectors, however, unless all your computing devices are relatively recent, and incorporate USB-C connections, you will find that using the Flash drive between computers is more difficult. USB Type-A connections remain the more common standard.

I hope this information has been helpful in resolving your question.
