Trying to erase all data on hard drive in order to recycle old laptop. Keep getting erase process failed, couldn’t open disk or cannot erase because disk is in use. I am in recovery mode and tried first aid on everything. Totally stuck. Any help out there?

If you are recycling it probably isn't necessary. But you can always remove the hard drive and take a big hammer to it - my personal favorite!
EDIT: If you're getting "Disk is in use" that's probably because you are not booted in Recovery Mode? You can't erase a mounted volume.
This is my favorite approach as well. Amazing how it works to relieve stress and tension. I once had 28 laptops to get rid of after closing an office, what joy.
