incoming and out going calls often fail

iPhone 6, iOS 12.4.5, T-Mobile On both WiFi and cell, often a call will not go through, display just shows "calling . . ." then after about 20 seconds it says 'call failed'. Pressing the 'retry' button and the call most of the time goes through. Incoming calls, when answered it seem neither caller nor I can hear the other person, again if we hang up and caller tries again, things work.

Tried:

restarting

resetting network settings

turning WiFi off, then on

check to make sure there were no carrier settings updates

This seems like your carrier issue, Contact your Carrier (Cellular Service Provider) The agency who issued the SIM to you.

Call Failed or Dropped Calls / Disconnecting

In telecommunications, a dropped-call / Auto Disconnecting Calls / Call-Failed Muted conversation are mainly due to technical reasons / fault at the carrier's end. At times the calls are cut off before the speaking parties had finished their conversation and before one of them had hung up (dropped calls or Call Failed or Auto Disconnection or muted calls).

Few Reasons Your device Keeps Muting / Dropping / Disconnecting Calls or encounter Call Failed.

  • Your Signal Is Weak.
  • It's Raining (Cats & Dog)
  • The Cell Tower Is Overloaded / Heavy Traffic (Telecommunication)
  • You've Misunderstood Your Signal Strength
  • You are moving and the signal weakens while changing from one tower to another

Options Are...

As far as your listed reasons:

weak signal:  nope

raining:  nope

misunderstood signal strength:  I don't think so.

Moving:  nope

As far as your listed options:

turned airplane mode on, wait 15 seconds, turn back on      tried

restart:  tried

force restart:  haven't tried, but link does not cover iPhone 6, but iFixit does.  Force restart iPhone 6

battery:  just fine

remove/replace SIM.  I did this, I cleaned the contacts inside too.  This seemed to improve the situation last night, but this morning same problem.

Contact your carrier:  haven't done that yet.  This is probably the next thing to try.

This morning, instead of just turning WiFi off to force Cell tower use, I also turned off (under settings/phone);  'WiFi Calling'  and   'Calls on Other Devices' and WiFi.  This seems to have improved the situation.
