I bought a new USB 3.1 hub 7-port to plug in my 5 USB hard drives into my early 2015 Macbook Pro. Only some of the hard drives will mount, and not always not the same drives. The hub is powered up. I'm using all 7 ports. Previously, I had been using a USB 2 4-port powered hub which worked fine.

Get a hub from a reputable manufacturer. Even some USB hubs from reputable manufacturers are not always that good. See if Plugable (limited selection, but good products) has a USB3 hub, or StarTech, or Anker, or OWC. Make sure the hub supports the UASP protocol since you are using so many drives as that will provide better performance.

If the drives work perfectly when connected directly to your MacBook Pro without the HUB then you will need to get in touch with the manufacturer of the HUB. Since this is a forum for the MacBook Pro no one here can provide you with proper answers for a 3rd party peripheral if the Mac isn't faulty. Perhaps someone else will chime in if they have further advice but you will have to get in touch with the HUB manufacturer.
The larger power adapter is definitely makes a difference otherwise you are more limited on how many devices you can connect to the hub and what type of devices. I'm glad my recommendation worked out for you and thanks for the update.
Thanks for the help. I returned the cheaper 7-port USB hub for one from Anker, and it worked perfectly with 5 small hard drives. Part of the difference may have been that the first hub had only a small power unit while the Anker had a 60W unit. In any case, I've become an Anker convert. Thanks again.
I tried that first, but I could not find their website. It is manufactured by a Chinese company. The site on the box only gives the address: amazon.com/byeasy, and is of no help.
