Missing Apple ID

I have an old iPhone 5 that I'm trying to reset; it's been years since I've done anything with it.

When I try to erase it, to put it back to factory settings, it requests an password for an Apple ID that's an old work email address; I've since forgotten the Apple password I used.

Here's the problem: *Apple* doesn't recognize this email address--though it's being requested by my phone--as an Apple ID, and so I can't even reset the password. I get

"This Apple ID is not valid or not supported."

Any thoughts about how to resolve this? Not that it's a great loss, but it's an annoyance.

If necessary, if you are the original owner, contact Apple ID Support. Apple Support will need to see the original purchase receipt with the serial number/paperwork.

You iForgot at Apple ID: Your Account for Everything Apple https://appleid.apple.com/#!&page=signin. Put in the old work Apple ID, and eventually you'll have the opportunity to answer the related security questions.

I don't see a path forward for you. You can get Apple telephone support for help in solving your problem using this link https://getsupport.apple.com/?caller=kbase&PGF=PGF63005&category_id=SC0245&symptom_id=23362 Be patient sometimes Apple support is closed to immediate phone support.

Sorry, I should have mentioned: The response I'm getting, "This Apple ID is not valid or not supported," is when I enter the ID on this page: https://iforgot.apple.com/password/verify/appleid.
