can't sync ipod touch because connection to ipod has been reset

what on earth does this error message mean? i'm trying to do routine sync between my ipod touch and macbook pro. however, i have been doing this successfully for the past 3 months, since i got the new macbook. so this is a surprise. i don't think i've changed anything...
