Renewing my iPad

I have an iPad which is getting old and I am not sure which model I should buy to replace it. I just want one that is virtually an updated version of my old one. The serial number on my old one is DL***187. Can you advise me please.

I have requested that the moderators remove the serial number from your question. This should not be posted here.

From the limited device information appended to your question, I infer that you have an iPad4. With update support for this model having been withdrawn by Apple in September 2017, it cannot be updated beyond iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only models) and iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi & Cellular). iPad4 cannot be updated to any later major version of iOS as it lacks the minimum hardware requirements needed to run more recent versions.

Many App Developers have also dropped support for older devices and iOS versions preceding iOS12 - and have withdrawn older versions of their Apps from the Apple App Store.

The nearest equivalent current model, in terms of capability, will be the current 7th Generation iPad (a.k.a. iPad7). Whilst being the most basic of the current iPad range, it has a slightly larger 10.2” screen (iPad4 was 9.7”) and supports current iPadOS 13.x. Hardware specifications of iPad7 will vastly outperform every aspect of your existing iPad4.

I hope this is helpful in proving the answer that you were looking for - and provides an economical solution to your needs.

The best iPad for value and features is the 2019, 10.2 inch screen iPad 7th generation.

As an example and compared to your older iPad,

The baseline 2019, 10.2 inch screen 7th gen iPads have a 1/2 inch larger retina screen, newer, more powerful and nearly 2-1/2 times faster 2.3 Ghz, A10 Fusion processors, AT LEAST, 3-4 times the internal RAM, with the 2019, 7th gen iPad having 3 GBs of internal RAM, iPadOS 13 support, with much better and improved multitasking features, Apple Pencil and Apple Smart keyboard cover support and have better audio speakers and better/improved built-in cameras.

Also, the 7th gen iPad runs THE EXACT same iPadOS 13 with every software feature all other newer and better, more expensive iPads run!

Also, if you search other online sellers of this iPad model, you can save, at least, between an additional $60-$100 depending on the seller and the device storage model ( 32 or 128 GBs internal storage models).

If you can, you do not have to pay Apple's own pricing on the 2019, 7th gen iPad.

Best of Luck to You!

You can probably get along just fine with the Air 3 or the 7th gen ipad.

Both of those are just fine for your average ipad usage...email, gaming, surfing etc.

The Pro is a very highly powered device, but unless you are doing something intensely graphic’s intensive - heavy high end games, graphic design, etc, it is probably more than the average person needs.

I have a 6th gen ipad and it works just fine to play a couple of games, participating in this forum, email, shopping, etc. (the 7th gen replaced my ipad last year)

Buy as large of a device as your budget allows since an iPad’s ‘hard drive’ is not expandable.
