reinstall Mac OS after erasing hard disk on Mac mini

I followed instructions for erasing my HD on my Mac mini, using Disk Utilities (as I'm trading it in). When I tried to reinstall macOS Mojave, I got the error message: 'the disc is not formatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled). Use disk utility to enable journaling or reformat the disk'. However, in Disk Utilities there are no options to reformat the Base System and I don't know what 'journaling' means. Can you help please?

Mac mini, macOS 10.14
