My classic mail view on my Mac Pro computer was eliminated. How can I get a classic view where I can "see" my mail in right column without opening (as protection from scammers)?

Apple decided to remove the Classic View from Outlook mail. This means I could accidentally open a mail with a virus or other as I can no longer view it unopened. Is there anyway to restore it?

Make sure "Show Side Preview" is selected in the "View" menu. If the pane still doesn't show, hover the cursor over the right edge of the Mail window until you see a left pointing arrow, click and drag the cursor to the left until the pane pops open.

Apple Support confirmed that it was their doing. An agent spent 30 minutes on the phone with me and confirmed it was the Apple update that eliminated the view, which is called Classic View. There was formerly a way to add or remove the view and that function was removed by Apple a few days ago. Fortunately, the Apple computer I won't add updates to still retains the third column preview view. DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO BRING THIS BACK? APPLE PHONE REPS DON'T.

If that is your concern it is not possible for an email message to affect a Mac in any way, even if you were to open the email message, and even if you load any remote content. You can prevent the latter in its Preferences > Viewing.

As for "Classic View" it has been eliminated from Mail, but if you are not seeing a three column presentation then explain what's missing. By default the leftmost column contains the Mailbox List, the center column is the Side Preview, and the rightmost column contains the body of the selected message.

I surmise you want to show the Side Preview, and it is not appearing. There is a longstanding bug in Mail that prevents that column from appearing if you de-select it and subsequently re-select it. To restore that column follow dialabrain's instructions.

I'd suggest moving to Apple Mail which was a great straight forward mail programme, but since the Catalina upgrade removed basic column functionality it has become useless. The ability to move, size or order your mail columns was so useful to personalise your mail and to make it work for you. Now all gone and a 'one size' 'take it or leave it' option - it's useless.

Good luck in finding a good Mail programme - because Apple won't provide one thats for sure!
