Apple Watch Series 1
Several times a day the characters on my display become quite large and float around the display. I have to shut the display off for several min to have the characters go back to normal size.

Check your zoom settings. Go into the watch app on the phone and tap on General > Accessibility and turn on/off zoom and/or adjust the zoom level.
If that is not the problem, then the first (and simplest) thing to try if something isn’t working right is to restart your Apple Watch and its paired iPhone. If necessary (device not responding), try a forced restart. Both methods can be found here:
