When having a huge library with many projects and events, I like the feeling that all my work is saved on another disc as well, in case ... After making few new steps, is there any way just to update the backup or one has to erase the full library on external disc and transfer it (100GB) there again ?
Maybe ... but I found it quite critical many times when suddenly I could not find all the original files, folders etc. ... and big problem ... to have all in one file is practical in a way ...
But is there any way to "de-consolidate" the consolidated library and to create an external folder with media etc. ?
So if I keep all the media in the external folder in both locations (computer, external disc) and progress in work, it is enough just to replace the library file ?
And one more question - is there any way in FCP to finally erase the unused media in the library ?
What I mean is this: You import lot of media and within the library projects you may finally not use all of them. Is there any way to "clean" the media directory by erasing the files that were not used ? (and would be stored there for nothing).
There are easy ways to go about this.
1) Copy the project to a new event in your library.
2) Make a new library, and copy this event to the new library.
Your project and all the media files will be copied to this new library.
3) External media will still be referenced. You can then, if you wish, consolidate to make copies of it all inside the library and have it self-contained.
Go to library properties. Change the storage location to a folder outside the library. Do that for cache as well and then consolidate.
It is already consolidated - and all media are within library file. I do not see any option to disconnect them and store them outside again ?
Yes ... this can be maybe a useful feedback to Apple to make it simple - like in professional audio applications ("clean the project directory):
The best thing is to keep your material, including optimized, and caches, external to the library bundle. That way the library itself is very small.
Sure, you can Consolidate to a location external to the library.
Just select a location and then click Consolidate.

When you consolidate outside the library the media doesn’t remain in the library as well; each media file is replaced by a symlink (a “pointer”, if you will) to the actual file. No duplicates.
That’s what Feedback’s for, in the FCP menu.
I think the current method is pretty easier and a lot safer. Also, a method that similarto what has been practiced in NLE production for many years.
Any way to easily update the library on external disc ?
