Apple TV will not connect to watch movies

I have an older plasma TV, and my APPLE TV device is a few years old, but I updated it just now. I give it my iTunes I’d, password, choose a movie to rent, it gives me a 6 digit number. My phone says add it to my password. I do and It keeps saying my password is incorrect. This has been going on for a full year. I have always used Apple devices , but I am not happy with this Apple TV. It worked for Many years.
