Inherited ipad reset

Inherited an iPad mini from my MIL (about 5 years old +/-). I do not have the password or account number. Is there a way to erase and reset? The procedures outlined on the Apple site did not work. It kept reverting to a password request. I don't care if all the data is erased, I just don't want to have to buy a new iPad.
