no hardware test on MacBook Pro late 2012

I want to do a hardware test but after shut down, when I hold just D nothing at all happens and when I press option + D, internet recovery is attempted but that ends in an error. Any ideas on how to get the hardware test to work would be appreciated.

Oh thanks for that info - very disappointing of Apple!

My left speaker has a terrible sound all of a sudden - very distorted, so I have run Disk Utility but nothing was picked up. So thought a hardware check would be the next step, before I start throwing money at it.
It's a retina, 13 inch, late 2012 running 10.15.4

Thanks for getting back to me

In or out of warranty you can get a free over the counter 'Apple Service Diagnostics' test /assessment

Make an appointment for a "hardware issue"—

note: due to the temporary closure of Apple Stores and the staggered reopening there may be some delays.

A few years ago a system firmware broke the ability to access the online Apple Diagnostics for many systems and Apple never fixed the problem accessing their servers.

What issues are you having which are prompting you to run the diagnostics? Maybe the community can assist you.

Do you have the Retina or non-Retina model? 13" or 15"? Which version of macOS?
