AppleTV pauses music playback when TV is powered off

I have an AppleTV hooked up to a home theater / audio system via HDMI. Marantz receiver, Panasonic plasma flat-screen TV. The TV and the receiver have all of their HDMI controls set to "off".

I like to select music to play and then turn the TV off while listening. When I power the TV off, the Apple TV pauses any music that's playing. I can re-start it by pressing the "play / pause" button on the remote after a few seconds, but it's an annoyance.

I can't find any settings that will stop this behavior, but I would LOVE to find a way to make it stop.

I got it to work by sending the audio to my receiver instead of HDMI. Now the music doesnt stop when the TV is turned off. I had to turn off "Power off link" on my Panasonic TV as well.

Mine is set up this way but everything goes through HDMI. Thinking I can take the audio our optical for music and that might solve the problem.

I wonder if turning off CEC on the TV will stop from pausing.

This is worth a shot. I may try this as a next option. It’d require one setting on the amp for “listening to” and one for “watching” the AppleTV, but it might do the trick. Will report back if I get up to the re-wiring.

Thanks. Is there any way to turn it off? I’d love to be able to select the album I want to play, start it, and then turn the TV off without the music pausing.

Hm. I wonder if there’s a way to “trick it” or insulate it from getting the signal from the TV (via an HDMI adapter or something) so that it would work the way I’m trying to get it to.

My setup is pretty much the same. The Apple TV connects to my receiver (Pioneer). The receiver connects to the TV. I didint have to rewire anything.

It is not a setting to turn off. It is meant to be used with the TV on so it will pause when it no longer detects that signal. If you want to use that way then you will have to resume it after the TV has been turned off.

CEC will have no impact on what you are trying to do. Ultimately Apple TV is designed to be used with a TV and pausing music when the TV is off will be normal behaviour.
