Crash report: Security Update 2020-002 on 10.13.6 GPU issues

Hello,

on May 1st I received an update request from the Italian App Store on my MacBook Pro 8,2 with High Sierra.

Since I installed this Security Update 2020-002 the computer crashes every time it switches from integrated to discrete graphic card.

I can't open any software which requires hardware acceleration like Skype or Adobe CC.

The system won't shut down properly, it crashes and then I can turn off the computer from the login screen.

Generally, my CPU temperature has risen of 10°C circa since the update. I constantly monitor the thermometer on iStats Menu since this machine has an infamous overheating malfunction.

As it is the computer is unusable, and I see I can't revert from this update.

I'm waiting for Apple to fix this situation with another, better update.

MacBook Pro 15", macOS 10.13

Do you not have a Time Machine backup to Restore to/from?

Well, Apple has Feedback that they say gets read, but I think it;s doubtful unless you take a few million others with you...

This Mac is of the generation that often had the discrete GPU chip fail.

I have this model, and my chip has failed. I force my Mac to use ONLY the integrated intel GPU and that avoids the discrete GPU issues

gfxCardStatus is a free menu bar application that keeps track of which graphics card your MacBook Pro is using at any given time.

You can force a Macbook Pro to use the Integrated intel graphic via gfxCardStatus

.

The above does not work on Sierra and beyond, HOWEVER, this version works on High Sierra:

Thank you for your prompt reply BDAqua.

I'd like to start with an explanation: my first purpose is to report to the Mac community that this system update has caused many problems on older Macs, and my MBP's model (late 2011) hasn't been mentioned still as far as I've searched. I'm 100% sure my Macbook stopped working right after this update and I hope Apple will consider this particular model's issue when working on its adjustments.

I already sent the error report from the system's interface thrice. If you have a more suitable place where Apple could notice this difficulty, please let me know.

I did a backup after the update and I don't remember my full history of backup. I can't access Time Machine from the booted system since its interface uses hardware acceleration and it leads to crash.

I'll try your solution from boot hoping my GPU doesn't stop the restore's course, and will let you know my results.

Thanks again for your concern.

Hello, I'm back from the backup from boot. It worked!

I reverted to system update 2020-001 10.13.6 and the OS can sustain graphic card switching again. This is an important piece of info, since it's clear the latest update doomed my MBP 8,2 and I can openly say do not install the April update on your system if you have this machine (Macbook Pro Late 2011) and lack backups, or you will need to initialize all your data. It's definitely not your GPU that's broken!

I thank you for sharing the solution to restore from Recovery. I seldom backup my Time Machine but it was my first time at system reverting since I didn't ever needed it in the past.

This MBP is a war hero since it underwent GPU reballing twice, and I can't separate from it yet. I'm also a faithful user of gfxCardStatus, or I wouldn't be able to guess every graphic switching accurately. Too bad this app doesn't really affect the hardware preferences in my case: I can't deactivate the AMD 6750.

This is another topic that I wouldn't start here, but I recently found this workaround http://dosdude1.com/gpudisable/ my only fear is that I can't go back to using the AMD and say goodbye to the Display port, so I never really tried it. Maybe I'll consider asking the developer. Thanks again.
