My late 2014 iMac (32gb Ram) is struggling with editing and rendering using Premiere Pro. Would an egpu help and, if so, what hardware would you recommend? I have bought a Sandisk Pro Extreme 2TB SSD for storage, but it doesn't seem to help much. Unfortunately, I'm limited to either USB3 or Thunderbolt 2 ports on this model. I'd very much appreciate some advice. Many thanks

Your iMac is really about maxed out. Your RAM is at the max and SSD is the way to go for storage and running the OS etc. Unfortunately, you need Thunderbolt 3 to use an External GPU (eGPU) and get maximum performance. You can use a TB2 to TB3 adapter to get them connected, but the TB2 speed becomes a bottleneck. I’ve not personally used that setup, but I’ve friends who are editors and felt the slight performance gain didn’t justify the high cost of the enclosure and higher end graphics card. I think the money you’d have spent upgrading and from the sale of your current computer would go a good ways towards a newer, more capable iMac.

Thanks Jeff...I feared that might be the case. Unfortunately, the cost of an adequately spec'd replacement is way beyond my means at the moment, so I might be forced to go down the Hackintosh build route.
