Is it possible to track formula results in a separate table?

I have 1 week of nutrition data, e.g. calories for each day of the week.

I write down all foods I eat in one column, and a footer row calculates with a custom formula the total calories for that day.

What I would like to do, is to automatically copy those calculated calories into a new spreadsheet, but only the result, not the formula itself.

That way, when I reset the calorie tracking table to make new entries each week, the calories of the last week would remain in the separate table.

Do you think something like this is possible? If not, what other options do I have?

Hi Sascha,

You can copy the totals to another table in the same document in real time using a simple cell reference to the cell containing the total.

As 'real time' implies, the copied value will change with every change in the value in the cell being copied, including the weekly change to zero when you 'reset the calorie tacking table.'

To keep the 'historical' values, you will need to replace the formulas in the cells with the last values calculated by these formulas. Fortunately, that's a pretty easy task.

Step 1: Select the cells, then press command-C to copy.

Step 2: Select the first cell of a set to hold the now 'historic' values. Go ti the Edit menu and choose Paste Formula Results

You can create each week's list using the same set of cells, then copy each weeks totals and Paste Formula Results into a separate row for each week, or you could choose to have several rows containing the same set of cell references, then Copy the results from a new row every week and Paste Formula Results back into the cells you just copied from.

In Numbers, "Document" and "Spreadsheet" are both shortforms for "Spreadsheet Document". "A new Spreadsheet" means you'd need to create a "new document" each week, and paste the results into a table in that "new spreadsheet."

I suspect you want to keep the 'historical' values in the same "Spreadsheet" as the one in which you have the table that does the calculations, using a different Table, and possibly placing that Table on a different Sheet from the one holding the table where the current records are kept.

Barry
