Where are FCPX fonts are located?

I have a third party plugin (MotionVX titles) and sometimes FCPX asks me to download the font, in this case was HanziPen SC Regular. What location does it get installed, I looked all over and mac spot search, did not find any...nothing! But I do see this font when I use it in FCPX titles.

Thanks.

mTitle is it's own framework. You should have received instructions for custom font installations from MotionVFX if they were included.

There are several fonts in the FCPX collection that use non-Mac-standard encodings (and several are available because of the wide range of language symbols used — FCPX IS an international product). Generally you don't have to worry about it because the Mac takes care of matching font encodings to the keyboard encoding settings you have set for your system. Although it is kind of cool to go through to see what's available — there are some surprises sometimes :)

There is no such thing as "FCP X fonts".

Fonts in macOS can exist in a few select locations.

The easiest way to handle fonts is with the built-in Font Book application.

If you are really interested in knowing where a font lives, select it in Font Book, control-click and choose Show in Finder.

In some cases, this will not work, but a tooltip will appear if you hover the mouse pointer over the font name. For example,

Fonts can reside in several different locations. Using Font Book to install fonts for your system is THE recommended method of installing fonts. Fonts can also exist in /Library/Fonts, /System/Library/Fonts, Application bundles, and there have been (don't know if they still exist) third party font management tools that would allow you to "activate fonts" (or deactivate them as needed).

The fonts in FCPX are also in Motion. Fonts in Application bundles are NOT available system wide. In order to make those fonts available system wide, you must go into the application and copy or duplicate the fonts (see the list in the previous post) out of the application (select all the fonts and OPTION - DRAG them to an external location — then add them to your system via Font Book).

Any changes to fonts (setup, locations, etc.) will require all active application be restarted in order to have access to those fonts. [This is due to font caching and how the OS manages fonts in general -- just because a font is installed at any given time does not mean that any given application is even aware of it — on launch, the current font list is read into the running application ... only once.]

In general — don't mess with fonts. Follow the rules. [The rules are: use Font Book!!!] Fonts are the #1 killer of applications on Macs.

You can organize your fonts into categories in Font Book. If you use Motion, that is a convenient way to have your fonts arranged. For the LIFE OF ME(!!!), I do not know why this option is NOT available in FCPX.

(NOTE - you DO NOT have a collection named FCPX Collection unless you expressly create one in Font Book — what is shown is part of MY collection of collections ;))

Organizing your fonts in categories is actually rather convenient. A single font can be added to multiple categories. However — DO NOT EVER delete a font from a Category if you ever plan to add it back to that category. If you locate a font for deletion in a category, you should select it, then go into the All Fonts section where it will also be selected, then delete it from there. That way, you can add an new version of the font with the same name and specifications back into its custom category.

Clear??

If not, ask specific questions. As a font maker, I deal with this stuff all the bloody time!

Hi Tom.

FYI, some 3rd party apps are using specific fonts that are not on my system. For example when I select some of the titles from mTitle 3D by motionVFX I get a popped out message asking: "Font Henzi Pen Regular is missing, would like the FCPX to install that font?" So after clicking OK, it does appear in drop down font inside of the 3rd part application effect, FCPX. But... not on my system. This must have happened to me at least a dozen of times. And thse times are not searchable in my font book. This is a strange behavior needs to be addressed to the Motion VFX company and see if they have the answer.

This is 64 thousand dollars question. Where the font gets installed???

Thanks Fox_m. I did not receive any instructions, maybe because when comes time using the font the message" Install this font" takes care of the installation instruction.

I remember using another effect and the message poped up, about some strange font, and I always preview online about this specific font, which was some Arabic font, so obviously I did not install it.
