The Brother MFC-J5330DW is an Apple AirPrint-enabled printer. Remove the existing entry in Printers & Scanners, and add it again. You may want to reset the printing system which will remove all entries from Printers & Scanners. Then, refer to Add a printer on Mac. When adding the printer again, you must specifically choose AirPrint.

About AirPrint - Apple Support

Do not install any drivers. No drivers are necessary. Apple recommends that you do not install any drivers or other software from the device manufacturers.

To scan documents using your Brother MFC-J5330DW, refer to Scan images or documents. Once again you do not require any manufacturer-provided software.

The macOS application firewall is unrelated. To learn about the application firewall please read About the application firewall - Apple Support.

I can't find that model number on Brother's website. LC3317 corresponds to a Brother ink cartridge, but not a printer.

Lacking that knowledge, Catalina natively supports only AirPrint devices. Since your printer is new, it's probably AirPrint-enabled. Add that printer to Printers & Scanners according to Add a printer on Mac once it establishes communication with your wireless network according to Connect an AirPrint printer to a Wi-Fi network.

In Printers & Scanners, you must specifically choose AirPrint.

Update the Drivers and Firmware:

Get them from the manufacturer (Brother) and non other. Elsewise, it may end up being malware that is installed. As the first below link site reads, "For optimum performance of your printer, perform an update to the latest firmware."

Downloads:

If that does not work, then

  1. Uninstall: the Printer
  2. Install: the Drivers
  3. Restart: the Mac
  4. Reinstall: the Drivers
  5. Restart: the Mac
  6. Update: the Firmware
  7. Restart: the Mac
  8. Try: a new copy

thanks - I've realised the model is MFC- J533ODW. The printer and scanner were working fine (via Wifi) - until I upgraded to Catalina . Now the printer works but my Mac doesn't even recognise the Brother machine at all when I try to scan. I've tried reinstalling the scanner from the brother site but as I had urgent docs to get away - discovered I can scan to a USB and then copy the doc from the USB to my Mac - so doing that until I can get to bottom of issue. One site recommended turning my firewall off - which I tried - but no change - so I've turned it back on.
