I tried resetting my MacBook mid 2012 this morning and now it’s asking me to install OS X Mountain Lion on it as the only option reinstalled. My question is, is this normal? Can I use OS X Mountain Lion in 2020? How can I upgrade again?

I downloaded through web not through App.
I tried downloading in App Store but it says: This update requires MacOS version 10.9 or later. I don’t know what that means

Install Mountain Lion as instructed, download El Capitan, High Sierra, or Mojave, and then upgrade to Catalina. Unless you have a thumbdrive or other physical disk containing a newer OS, you'll need to go through 10.8.
