Quick Start vs Restore from iTunes Backup

I just got a new iPhone (2020 iPhone SE) and want to transfer EVERYTHING (apps, photos, settings, etc.) from my old iPhone (iPhone 6'S). Ideally, I don't want to download anything, change any settings, re-type any passwords...I just want my new phone to be exactly like my old one.

Apparently there are (at least) two methods to do this in iOS 13 -- Quick Start and restoring from an iTunes Backup. (I know that "iCloud Backup" is also an ostensible option, but Apple tells me that I don't have enough iCloud space to backup my old phone.)

After Googling both of these options for 20-30 minutes, I haven't come up with any satisfactory answers. It sounds like with both options I may need to redownload my apps, or re-input passwords, etc.

All the data is *on* my old iPhone. There should be no reason that I can't just transfer it to the new iPhone. Is there a way that I can (essentially) push a button and have every single setting, app, preference, etc., all the way down to the tiniest toggle switch in "Preferences", copied over to my new phone?

You can back up the old phone to iTunes on your computer, then restore that backup to the new phone. If you want everything to transfer you must check Encrypt Backup in iTunes. When you do you will be prompted for a backup password; WRITE IT DOWN. There is no way to use the backup without the password.

Note that a backup does not include music or apps; they will be redownloaded from the respective stores after the first stage of the backup completes. If you have music from sources other than the iTunes store you sync them using a USB cable from your computer.

Also, anything that you sync to iCloud by going to Settings/[your name]/iCloud and turning on the sync switches will not be in the backup; instead you turn on the same switches on the new phone.

You might also consider increasing your iCloud storage. You can expand it to 50 GB for 99¢ a month.

Hi robbjunk,

Thanks for reaching out in Apple Support Communities. I understand you have some questions about setting up a new device using your current device. I can see why you'd reach out for this information; I'd like to help. Any of the methods you listed will restore your new device to the same settings, data, and other preferences you have set on your current device. These resources illustrate the differences in backup methods:

Since you mention that you don't have enough space for a current iCloud backup, you can use the steps in this resource to remove data to create more storage for your backup, or you can temporarily increase your storage subscription to accommodate your backup: Manage your iCloud storage

If you're unable to use iCloud for your backup, or there isn't enough space for Quick Start to update your backup with the most recent information you'll be limited to using either your most recent backup available in iCloud or iPhone migration with Quick Start: Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Most apps should be automatically reinstalled after you restore your backup or complete iPhone migration; there are some passwords you'll need to enter and content you'll need to redownload regardless of the method you use to move or restore your information. The steps you can anticipate taking can be found here: Finish setting up your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Best Regards.
