Airpods 2 Battery Level Reporting Inaccurate

I just got a pair of Airpods 2 and have noticed that when I check the battery level the numbers will change radically from second to second. For instance, I'll open up the case near my phone and see the case at, say, 75%, and the airpods 100%, then close the case and reopen and the numbers will be vastly diffferent. I can keep doing this and the numbers keep changing.

I reset the bluetooth connection and that has seemed to fix the problem, but is it just temporary?

It makes me wonder if buying these was a mistake.
