Trying to find a way to remove/hide the dock on the app screens so that it looks like the home screen. I don’t use the dock so it is just a grey rectangular band at bottom of screen. Any help appreciated! Thanks.

There is not way to hide the dock. It is coded into the iOS and emptying it does not hide it, as you have already learned. You can provide feedback to Apple if you would like them to consider a change, Feedback - iPhone - Apple

What app might you be talking about?
The dock doesn’t generally appear. Here’s what Safari looks like, for example.
