imovie how long is too long

Does anyone experienced with iMovie have a guide on how long to cap an imovie at so that the file size is not too big?

Wanting to start collating our home videos, lots of hours to put together ... wondering if I should cap each Imovie at 30 mins, 60 mins? or longer?

If you are using iMovie 10, take a look at this link that suggests a workflow for editing large amounts of video.

Hi Rich

Thank you for these suggestions.

what I’m really after is that given I have a lot of footage I’m trying to figure out at what point to break it up and start in the next iMovie ... ie. I can join together lots of short home video clips from my iPhone, but at what point is an iMovie too long and too big a file that it becomes unusable.

ie. I could make a home video of 3 months of footage, or 6 months or a year per iMovie project. Or each time I get to 1 hour i start a new project.

just don’t want to have such big files that aren’t very usable

The size of your projects would be totally your call. Whatever works for you.

From a technical standpoint there is no limit to the size of an iMovie project, other than the amount of free space available on the drive that stores your iMovie Library. I would say that if you are working with really big projects you would be wise to have at least 75GB of free space on your computer. I suppose that a really huge project, like 4 hours long, could increase the risk of crashes and spinning beach balls.

Personally, and this is strictly my opinion, any iMovie project longer in duration than 30 minutes is not very watchable by one's audience.
