apple watch and iPhone 5S

trying to pair - apple watch series 3 (GPS) with iPhone 5S (IOS 12.4.6)

the app says software needs to be updated, but the phone is on Automatic Updates and is up to date.

Help?

Apple Watch Series 3 requires an iPhone 6s or later with iOS 13 or later. Also, 12.4.6 is the most recent version of iOS that phone can run.
