Long iMovies to Vimeo

Hello. I could use some help. I am using iMovie (on my Mac mini) to create 45-50 minute long church service videos each week. I am compiling music, scripture, lessons...etc and posting them online for the community to view. I am posting them via Vimeo.

Here's the issue. In order to upload/share them on Vimeo i have to reduce the quality down to 240p (mobile size) because the limit is 500MB. I have tried to reformat some of the larger segments before I upload them to iMovie. And even changed some video segments into audio to reduce the MB of those specific segments. But... this did not effect the overall MB size once it's all put together. The only way to get it the size reduced is to shorten the iMovie to under 30 minutes...but I don't want to split the service into two segments.

The pastor used Movie Maker for the first 2 attempts at this and those videos are just as long (or longer) and able to be viewed as high as 720p on Vimeo. I am using his account on Vimeo...so it's not a membership issue (as far as I know). Am I doing something wrong on iMovie? What are my options?

Can someone help me with this? Thank You

Hi, dakota606,

No way to avoid loss of quality if you want to make your present file significantly smaller. Alternatively, you could edit out some of the material to make a smaller file size. Or use AirGraph's method of reducing the bitrate, that should work well. Or, though I know that you don't want to, you could split the video into Part 1 and Part 2 and thus preserve your full high definition.

Another way would be to try sharing the video to email, where you will be given small, medium, large and hi-def options. You won't be sending the email, but just sharing the video to the email template. You can choose your size and then drag the video out to your desktop for upload to Vimeo. If the medium or large options work that would probably get you decent quality. Try it and see what file sizes that you get. You can see the estimated file size for each option depicted under the preview pic that is displayed in the share box.
