iPhone number changes

I got a new iPhone SE and switched my husband from a flip phone to my old iPhone SE. Verizon took care of switching his flip phone number to the old iPhone SE. He is getting a message that he needs to change the phone number on his phone in Apple ID. If I change the number for him, will this delete my number as the number associated with the Apple ID account? He will do no purchases with his phone. Anything apps loaded for him will be done by me. He will use very little in features offered to him.
