LaCie Hard Drive Issues

I just recently bought a 5 TB LaCie HDD off of the Apple website and it just came in. Whenever in plug in the hard drive I can tell its on because I can hear it whirring. But when I look in my Finder or desktop I can't see the option to view it or put any files on it. I even have the LaCie toolkit downloaded from the web and it shows that no external device is connected.

Cane someone please help me I have less than 1gb of storage left on my laptop and I need somewhere safe to store my files.

All new drives need to be initialized before use

always advised to erase/format any new hard drive—even those that claim "mac ready"

From Disk Utility.app>View>Show All Devices> erase the parent drive (manufacturers name)

and format as GUID/hfs+

Erase and reformat a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac ...

File system formats available in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple ...

Backup disks you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support
