Why doesn't my iPhone XS Max back up? This has not been a problem, but now it won't back up or even appear when I try to sync.

I read the article. I get ‘The selected device could not be found.’ As a message. I’m trying to sync AND backup to my iMac computer. It has worked fine for over a year and now all of a sudden it isn’t
Is your mac storage full?
I have so much storage to spare. It does the same thing with my wife 7+
syncing and backing up my iPhone to my iMac using music.
