13" MacBook Pro 2017 - Blinking horizontal lines at the top of the screen

There are horizontal lines blinking at the top of my screen after some heavy using time.

Model: MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports)

Processor 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5

macOS Catalina: version 10.15.4

I have tried reseting SMC and PRAM, but the lines were still there.

Does anyone encounter this problem as well?

The repair program seems to be only for MacBook Pro 2016, isn't it?

GUYS I HAVE IMPORTANT NEWS: I GOT FREE REPAIR

be prepared for what i am going to say, it will be unpleasant for most of you but i hope to let you get my impression and what i feel like it worked in order to get a free repair.

I write from Italy, Milan and my problem regards a MacBook Pro 2017 13'' (2 thunderbolts, no touch bar) since september 2020, i tried a lot of calls to Apple support, at least two different practices with long trials via software updates, computer formatting and many other useless solutions: the problem was definitely hardware.

I think that someone in this discussion got the keypoint: it seems a detail but i seriously think that what makes really the difference in this terrible situation is the Keyboard Service Program (https://support.apple.com/keyboard-service-program-for-mac-notebooks), i don't know why but i had a feeling that there was a correlation between this program and the other one (yes you read it correctly: THERE IS ANOTHER PROGRAM).

Yesterday, unfortunately, or now i would say fortunately, one key fell off, i also noticed the barspace having some issues when writing (sometimes double space was written with one touch) and in my mind i remember also the bottom arrow being sticky.

Without any hope i went to Apple Support and also tried again to talk about the horizontal lines problem: they recognized in 5 minutes the keyboard problem, and BE PREPARED... they also recognized the horizontal lines, they even didn't want to see it, a picture was enough for them (and by the way is the same pic you can find above this answer and that other apple workers refused) mentioning that there is "another repair program", i literally asked for the name of it and where to find it, the worker smiled and told me that "some of these programs are silent", can you imagine guys? SOME OF THESE PROGRAMS ARE SILENT. I had spent lot of time asking about this problem and the answer was always the same: there is no repair program for this.

I don't know if those of you that received this response went phisically to genius bar, i feel like this is an internal procedure that they apply in certain situations (and here i think that they apply it mostly if you have also keyboard problem), but if no information is provided on their website (like with the first repair program) maybe online they will tell you that it doesn't exist simply because they don't know it and they read the info from the website.

At the end of the day they recognized both problems and give a free repair for a total amount of almost 1000 euros, this can't be real.

I will add an extra point: to me the worker was a lot aware of the problem of horizontal lines, in 2 seconds he said that he knew well that problem and that was related to "some connectors" that had this issue and which is causing in these models sometimes horizontal, sometimes vertical lines, to me it looks that he literally said that apple knows well this problem, this strategy seems a sneaky way to minimize free repairs. YOU MUST INSIST GUYS.

I don't know, i am seriously confused, happy for me but sad for you, i want you all to insist as i did, trying the approach i pointed in this answer. The following pics proof what i am saying.

Same issue since last year. Mine black lines is from the bottom of the screen. As you can see white dot under the Dock can not see already. Only use few hours will become like this. Then few hour after will become all screen black.

I went to apple store when I found this problem. However, they can not solve this issue for me. Only can do is changing the new screen.

This is my first time to buy the McBook. I thought I could use it for a long time, maybe I‘m wrong :(

I'm experiencing the exact same thing with my MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017).

I went to see a genius and he basically said I can replace the screen for 600 euros, or try to live with it!

Looks like a lot of people with the same model experiencing the same problem.

Is there anyone from Apple Support who can reply on this please and bring us some more clearity?

Going to see a genius is not an answer.

This is my screen. Leaving traces of light behind from a previous screen. It usually gets worse than this.

I've been having the same issue for about 6 weeks now (2017, 13 '' MacBook). It's getting worse daily. The lines used to disappear after shutting down the Laptop and they still do but reappear after around 30 seconds. The longer the Laptop is running the worse the problem gets. The lines even turned pink the other day.

I will ad a few pictures of my screen with a white background because the problem ist most visible there. I am only experiencing the lines on the top of the screen though not on the top and bottom like some of the unfortunate people in this thread.

Yes, I am currently working with an external monitor. The Problem is definitely the MacBook-Screen.

The Lines do however get so pronounced after a few hours of screentime, that it is impossible so discern anything in that area. They also get worse with the screen off and the MacBook running, so it has nothing to do with the brightness of the screen.

Exact same issue on a MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports), the only way I was able to have it "kinda" under control was lower the screen brightness as much as I possibly can and I literally put a small cooling fan pointing directly to the back of the screen, that way at least I get to 8 hours working normally, once I shutdown the fan and/or try to increase the brightness it takes literally minutes for the horizontal lines to appear.

Only difference is that instead of being at the top of the screen they are at the bottom. But exact same behavior.

Me too same problem.

It was all fine The previous day and the next morning I open it and see horizontal lines! No reason why it happened suddenly! And I haven't even used my laptop heavily.

And the screen is are pinkish around the corners and 2 or 3 extra prominent lines and sometimes the previously active screens are visible from under the current screen! And If I scroll down like in safari, the previously displayed content shows through underneath.

And it’s 58,000 INR to replace the screen.

the service center said, it worked fine with an external screen so they have to replace the screen.

Macbook Pro 2017!

Hey, more than just helping it does wonders, obviously I don't plan on keeping it running the whole time on full blast, but so far I have been running my MBP 2017 for 6 hours straight and haven't had the issue, so that's definitively good... but I made it work only when it goes beyond 45 celsius degrees, since that's even easy to spot manually, I just touch the metal part over the touch bar and it is really hot, If I set the fans to full blast for 10 minutes the CPU temperature goes down almost immediately and once again I can touch the case and it is back to regular temperature.

Still like you said, hopefully Apple will recognize that there's a problem with this hardware and it shouldn't fall into the users to pay for that.

Hi, thank you so much for the advice! So far I’m using external fan and could work perfectly for around 5 hours.

I’d like to use that kind of software but after doing some research, some people said that using that kind of software means pushing your fan’s limit (or working against its normal performance) — and it would harm your laptop in the long run.

This weekend I’ll take my laptop to technician to clean the dust on my fan. From a forum I’ve found, cleaning the dust on your fan / changing the thermal paste would help. I’d try the first suggestion and then I’ll give an update after a week usage.

Not sure if this is just a coincidence but I too think that the lines on my mac started appearing after a software update (some version of Catalina, don't remember the exact number). Some of the older comments in this thread also mention the same thing happening.

But the apple support guy told me that's not the case as the lines were still present when rebooted in safe mode (which apparently rules out software issues).

Just a quick note on something that happened today. As you might have already read in my previous post, after I formatted my macbook pro first 45 minutes I still had the lines on the screen and then everything went back to normal. Today, for the first time I removed the charger and I had the lines again after about a week not having any issues.

I restarted the computer, let it sit for about 30 minutes, plugged in and everything went back to normal again.

My assumption and this is my 100% assumption since support really has no idea what's going on. If your battery isn't strong enough when you unplug the laptop it does not feed the video card enough power to keep up and it sort of goes out of the cycle and can't catch up afterward.

Hello apple support is not going to do anything. They says only few macbooks are affected so they cannot give free repair. Its the defect due to their design but it seems you, me and many people are not DHH or popular figure that apple will recognize. I went to store and they say they will charge 800$. There is no choice. I even phone called them at the end they will say "We don't control what store will charge you have to pay it to repair it". I even tried telling them at least reduce it to $400. But they didn't listened to me. I was talking like desperate but they dont care.

I think I will never purchase their any apple stuff. At least if I had purchased other company I could repair it cheaply. Thanks Apple for the lesson.

Hi,

I have the exact same issue and Mac Service Centre aren't doing anything about it they charged me $50 Dollars saying its an heating issue post the heat sink replacement the say issue popped up the next day they again took my MacBook in and didn't identify the issue and asked me to replace the display if I have the problem, for $650, they did damage my display assembly while diagnosing and nothing happened when I escalated the issue!
