how to manage iphone storage

i have 64 GB iphone 8. my phone memory is full with the photos and apps. I have just purchased icloud storage space. but due to full memory cant update software and can't take a back up. Please guide

More iCloud storage can only be of limited help with a shortage of storage on a device. See the information in About storage on your device and in iCloud - Apple Support
