I do not get the "update password" prompt for any keychain

Mojave 10.14.6

When I try to update the password for any keychain, whether an existing one or a brand new one, I am never shown the prompt to change the password.

This occurs even on all keychains, including new keychains I created to test this out.

I am getting a number of error messages in the Console related to this, but I can't find any help as to what they mean, or how to resolve them.

For this example, I created a brand new empty keychain called "test33", and gave it a default password, and then attempted to change the password. I can select "Change password for "test33"...", but I never get a prompt. I get these error messages.

Hello anopheles0,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities! I understand that when selecting "Change Password" in Keychain you are unable to due to no prompt. I can definitely see how this could be concerning. I'm happy to help!

If your keychain password is different from your username password on your Mac, change your keychain password to match your user password following the steps here:

If you need to update your keychain password on Mac

If your keychain password is the same as the MacOS user account, changing the user password will also change your keychain password:

Change or reset the password of a macOS user account

If you're still encountering an issue after trying the steps above, you can manually reset your keychain to create a new login keychain:

"Create a new login keychain, if necessary"

After resetting your password and logging back in to your account, you might see an alert that the system was unable to unlock your login keychain. This is expected, because the passwords for your user account and login keychain no longer match. Just click the Create New Keychain button in the alert.

If you didn't see an alert about your login keychain, or you see other messages asking for your old password, reset your keychain manually:

  1. Open Keychain Access, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.
  2. Choose Preferences from the Keychain Access menu, then click the Reset My Default Keychain button in the preferences window. After you enter your new password, Keychain Access creates an empty login keychain with no password. Click OK to confirm. Note: If you don't see a Reset My Default keychain button, close the preferences window and select the “login” keychain from the left side of the Keychain Access window. Press the Delete key, then click Delete References.
  3. Choose Log Out from the Apple menu to return to the login screen.
  4. Log in to your account using your new password. Your account password and login keychain password now match again.

Please respond back if you continue to have any issues.

Cheers!

Hi, I understand your answer, and I have been attempting to follow these instructions, but I feel you've misunderstood the problem. In step 3, it says to do this:

https://support.apple.com/guide/keychain-access/if-you-need-to-update-your-keychain-password-kyca2429/10.5/mac/10.14

  1. Select the keychain
  2. Select "Change password"
  3. A window pops up saying to enter the old and new passwords.

That window from Step 3 DOES NOT POP UP. Everything else works. I can unlock, create, erase, etc. I just cannot change the password for any keychain, ever.

I have tried with a new keychain:

  1. Open Keychain Access
  2. Create a new keychain, called "testKeychain"
  3. Set the initial password for testKeychain.
  4. Select "Change password for keychain "testKeychain"..."
  5. Nothing happens.

I'm unable to update to Catalina. It's not supported in my workplace, as we have several 32bit applications that I need to run. In addition.

I also tried by creating a brand new account on the Mac. I gave it Admin privileges, and created a new keychain. It also was unable to show the "Change password" popup.

I appreciate your prompt help, but I think this problem goes beyond normal support... I will talk to Apple support and see how it goes...
